Back when I used to live on Allen, I used to stop by Sunshine Cafe on the way to work for a Chinese hot dog bun for breakfast. The hot dogs were wrinkly and pale with the occasional, questionable hard bit, but it was cheap and convenient. Sunshine Cafe is no more, but you can still get hot dogs in the same location. Early this year, Los Perros Locos took over Sunshine’s old spot, and I’m happy to report their Colombian-style hot dogs and fries are far better than anything I’ve ever had at Sunshine. MORE »

Japadog, the wildly popular Japanese-style hot dog chain from Canada finally opened a location in New York last week, and I have to say I’m hooked. In the past week, I’ve been twice already. A lot of people find the toppings weird, but I don’t get it. We’re not talking jellied moose nose or maggot cheese here, just good ol’ Japanese toppings like miso, nori, and mayonnaise. I love art and I love sausage, but sausage art? Ummm, I’m not sure about this one. Supposedly, a few classic masterpieces, such as Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, were replicated using sausage in Russia and people were invited to eat them. Personally, I’m not sure I would want to eat cured meat on display in a public space. I don’t know what it’s like in Russia, but I know I wouldn’t want to eat something left out in the open in New York.
