So similar to last year, we ate Chinese food for Thanksgiving again. By now, it’s pretty much a point of no return for my family. I mean, given the ease, the price, and the lack of a million dishes to wash, I have a feeling we’ll never go back to the turkey feasts of the past. I still feel Thanksgiving isn’t exactly complete without a turkey, but considering the copious amount of delicious foods in the world to fill the turkey void, it’s far from horrible. For months I’ve been hearing about a really good Korean-Chinese restaurant in Queens. Personally, I’m quite happy with Mandarin in Palisades Park, so I never felt a strong desire to look any further. This was apparently not the case for Hannah, however, who texted early Saturday morning about going to Chinese House, or Joonggukjip (중국집), as the restaurant is more commonly called. On Cinco de Mayo, instead of getting sh*t-faced on margaritas, I met up with fellow food lovers — James, Chris, Robyn, Kåre, Melissa, Noah, Steve, Chichi, Hungry, Yvo, Michael, and Jeremy — for a Tsingtao and cumin-fueled night at Fu Run. The best dish of the entire meal was the Muslim Lamb Chop ($21.95), a rack of lamb fried crunchy and encrusted with an insane amount of cumin. Besides being a basic flavor bomb, the meat was juicy and fall-off-the-bone tender. I foresee another visit to Fu Run in the near future. No tequila, but no regrets. MORE »

Long time readers know I was a huge fan of the Singapore Chilli Crab Festival. Last week, Wendy Chan (the same woman behind the Singapore Chilli Crab Festival), along with daughter and food blogger Veronica Chan, brought to Flushing Asian Feastival, and I was invited to cover the event. As can be imagined, it was a great event with several small panels, some thought-provoking (Bun Lai of Miya’s Sushi spoke about the differences of sustainable eating versus eating locally during the Sustainable Seafood Panel) and some a little more light-hearted (In the Asian American Cuisine Panel, upon asked where he gets inspiration, Akira Back of Yellowtail responded that sometimes inspiration comes from “a stupid flower.” Hilarious.). But most importantly, there were a lot of tastings from Asian restaurants all around Queens. I made sure I did a lot of “research,” and my favorites of the day were the xiaolongbao from Nan Xiang, fish cutlets from Bownie, kimchi mal-ee (김치말이) from Hahm Ji Bach (함지박), and miang kana from Ploy Thai.
