
I’ve been eating a lot of Cuban sandwiches lately. It’s a nice break from banh mis and it also fulfills my daily dietary cheese requirement. (I’m a cheese freak if you didn’t know.) This is what I heard behind me as I stood engulfed in a sea of nondescript dress shirts and khakis. No, they didn’t start selling kati rolls at Banana Republic, I was waiting in front of the Biryani Cart a week after they were mentioned in the New York Times. Not sure what I was thinking, but hunger sometimes clouds a otherwise sensible mind. About twenty minutes later, I got my order and I was off with two kati rolls in tow. MORE »

I’m not a fan of fast-food chains, but Golden Krust has been a long time favorite of mine for quick and homey-tasting Jamaican food. Since I was little, I’ve been going to different Golden Krusts all around the city for their hard dough bread and Jamaican beef patties. Moreover, any chain restaurant that has oxtail stew on their menu is A-OK in my book.
Recently, I’ve been going to the Midtown location on 8th Avenue a lot for their their mini-meals, smaller and more manageable versions of their menu items. Sure, the Jamaican Dutchy Cart, at five dollars a pop, has cheaper mini-meals, but Golden Krust is closer to my work and sometimes the thought of plowing through the confused huddled masses in Times Square is enough to make me lose my appetite. And for the record, if another person on the street selling comedy club tickets asks me whether I like comedy, I’ll be showing them something really funny. My foot where the sun don’t shine! I mean, ‘HELLO!!!, YOU SEE ME EVERYDAY, HOW MANY TIMES ARE YOU GOING TO ASK ME?! AND JUST ‘CAUSE YOU SELL TICKETS FOR A COMEDY CLUB DOES NOT MAKE YOU A COMEDIAN! I never thought I’d be blogging about Dong Hai, but somehow I am. First of all, the place looks too ’80s neon to be taken seriously, and second of all, they not only serve Chinese food, but they also serve Thai food and Japanese food, including sushi. Thai food at a Chinese restaurant is weird, but I really draw the line at sushi. Just because a restaurant is run by Asian people, does not mean they know how to prepare sushi. In addition, except in a few regional cases, raw fish is not normally found in Chinese cuisine. You might as well go to Applebee’s and order a sushi platter. That said, you can understand my hesitation going to Dong Hai, but then Midtown Lunch got an email from a reader claiming the restaurant was even better than Szechuan Gourmet, and so I went, bravely where I had never gone before. It’s in the twenties these days in New York, which is pretty darn cold. Speaking of which, why are women’s fashions so freaking useless? I got a cute wool blazer recently, but the sleeves are 3/4, so now when I walk around outside, my forearms are freezing, while the rest of my body is toasty warm. Well, I guess I should just be grateful 3/4 length pants aren’t in fashion now. Sheesh.
So anyway, today it was crazy cold, so I decided to take my frozen forearms over to Kwik Meal to get a Lamb Pita. I figure, in this weather, the street vendors need my support. God love them, rain or shine, they’re always there, ready to serve you with a smile. That’s more than I can say about the service at the golden arches and the like.
