Ever wish the doughnuts at Doughnut Plant were sweeter? I always find them perfect, but I know some people complain they’re not sweet enough. If you’re one of those people, the seasonal cranberry yeast doughnut ($2.75) is the doughnut for you. Made with fresh cranberries, you’d think this bright pink doughnut would be very tart, but it’s actually more sweet than tart. Hardcore sugar fiends, rejoice! Everyone else, order the cranberry, but get your coffee black, no sugar. It’ll keep your sugar high in check. MORE »

I don’t usually go out for soba since I make soba bibimguksu (비빔국수; spicy, cold noodles mixed with various vegetables, including kimchi) quite often at home. Sure, the noodles aren’t homemade, but it’s still pretty damn good. However, for lazy days when I just want to slurp with no fuss, I’ve become fond of Cocoron, the new soba joint run by the husband and wife team (Yoshihito Kida and Mika Ohie, respectively) who met working at Soba Totto. The buckwheat noodles are made in-house daily, but more than the noodles, I like Cocoron for the interesting toppings. MORE »
Since I moved to the East Village, I haven’t been going to Essex Street Market as much as I used to. So this weekend on an onion run, I was pleasantly surprised to find Boubouki, a small food stall specializing in Greek food, tucked behind the shelves of fruits and vegetables. [In case you want to know, I get my onions ($1/bag) at Viva Fruits & Vegetables.] The sweets on display were enticing, but having just eaten a good number of doughnuts at Wonder City Coffee & Doughnuts, I decided on the spanakopita (spinach pie; $4) made with sheep’s milk feta, spinach, and dill. Perhaps it was the dill, or perhaps it was the ratio of the feta to the spinach, but the pie tasted fresh and bright; two adjectives I normally don’t use to describe spanakopita. It made for a nice snack before dinner. Next time, I’ll save room for dessert. MORE »
My afternoon snacks are usually sweet, but today it was a little savory and a little sweet. Imagine just the top of a Chinese sponge cake (remember the muffin tops on Seinfeld?) with pork floss and scallions, and that’s basically what I ate. Surprisingly, it was the scallions that made the cake taste more savory than the pork. Also, the scallions did a good job of stinking up my cubicle for a few minutes. All in a good day’s work. MORE »
This past Sunday was spent eating Chinese food, but the previous Sunday was spent eating doughnuts, er…. and then eating Chinese food. Nicholas was back in town and we decided to meet up for some doughnut fun at Doughnut Plant. His sister (T), Robyn, and Robyn’s friend Alex also joined in on the morning doughnut eating action. Of course at first there was a lot of bitchin’ on my part because Nick wanted to meet at 10 am and at one point someone suggested 9 am. My reaction: ‘Hell to the no!’ After many, many emails (all protests on my part), we finally settled on 10:30. As expected, I was late, Nick almost missed his bus back to Philly (SORRY!), and many tasty doughnuts were eaten. MORE »
