Back when I used to live on Allen, I used to stop by Sunshine Cafe on the way to work for a Chinese hot dog bun for breakfast. The hot dogs were wrinkly and pale with the occasional, questionable hard bit, but it was cheap and convenient. Sunshine Cafe is no more, but you can still get hot dogs in the same location. Early this year, Los Perros Locos took over Sunshine’s old spot, and I’m happy to report their Colombian-style hot dogs and fries are far better than anything I’ve ever had at Sunshine. MORE »
The Orange Blossom Yeast Doughnut ($3) rolled out a few months ago at
the Doughnut Plant. It’s a decent doughnut; one of their chewy yeast doughnuts with a sugary orange blossom glaze and topped with chopped cashews. The only problem is that the orange blossom glaze is very subtle. So subtle, if you weren’t looking out for it, you’d miss it entirely. I’m not a big sandwich person (more of a noodle soup girl), but this past weekend, all I ate were sandwiches. Not sure what happened, but when a craving hits, you just run with it. And I’m glad I did, because I think I just discovered a contender to my favorite downtown sandwich, Katz’s pastrami on rye. MORE »
