When you’re Korean and you want to go all out, you go to a barbecue restaurant, but when you want simple, cheap Korean food, you go to a “boonshik jip” (분식집; boonshik literally meaning minute meal and jip meaning house), a casual restaurant specializing in Korean fast food. If my mom and I had our way, we would probably eat at Todam (토담) — a restaurant in Northern New Jersey specializing in samgyupsal (삼겹살, uncured pork belly) — more often. However, since my dad is trying to cut down on meat and David is anti-pork, we save the restaurant for special occasions. Last month it was a very special occasion, my mom’s birthday, and without a second’s hesitation I suggested Todam. My mom eagerly agreed as did the rest of the family.
