Poutine, Gelato, and Sorbetto in NoHo – NYC

I wrote about gelato and sorbet in Italy, but great gelato and sorbet can also be found in New York.

Il Laboratorio del Gelato is fantastic for variety, but often times I have a craving for salted caramel, and when I do, Il Buco Alimentari e Vineria is where I go. The salted caramel is incredibly dense and smooth with a dark toasted caramel flavor (pictured above). On the other hand, the BF will usually have a hankering for Campari sorbet, and the grapefruit Campari sorbetto at Il Buco doesn’t disappoint. It’s bright, tart, and not too sour. A medium with two flavors will cost you $6.53. It’s a bit pricey, but completely worth it.

For something more savory in the neighborhood, one block over is Mile End Sandwich Shop where I’m partial to the poutine with smoked meat ($12). Crunchy french fries covered in chicken gravy and topped with cheese curds is a wonderful invention, but add tender smoked meat (Montreal’s distant cousin to New York pastrami), and you have something more akin to a meal than a late night post-drink snack. The cheese curds can sometimes be too hard, but the luscious smoked meat makes everything all right.

Mile End Sandwich Shop is currently closed for the summer, but is reopening this Thursday. As if you really need a reason, but with swimsuit season almost over, why not indulge in a little poutine and gelato?
