There’s lots of pizzerias in New York, but most are neighborhood joints not worth traveling for. Best Pizza in Williamsburg, however, is an exception. Their pizza, in particular their grandma slice (for those unfamiliar, I always think of a grandma as a thinner Sicilian, however, many pizzerias don’t even differentiate and call any square slice a Sicilian) is subway-worthy. Years ago, when I used to go to Mitsuwa before they renovated, the ramen wasn’t very good. It was decent enough to stave off hunger before diving into the Japaense snack aisle, and later perusing the extensive sake section, but nothing comparable to Ippudo in Manhattan. In recent years, however, things have changed across the river. The ramen at Santouka, the ramen stall in the food court at Mitsuwa, is actually good, excellent even, and I’d say rivaling some of the better ramen shops in New York City. MORE »
After many repeated fails on my part (I kept forgetting Smorgasburg is only on Saturdays), David and I finally made it out to Smorgasburg two weeks ago. If you haven’t been, it’s a huge outdoor food market right by the East River in Williamsburg. And when I say huge, I’m not exaggerating. It’s food vendor galore! There are some issues of course like crowding, long lines, and a lack of shade (I have a burnt forehead to prove it), but nothing unmanageable and definitely forgivable considering the variety. MORE »
