There’s been a lot of hype about Dough recently. So much so in fact, one Saturday, David and I rented a car and took a ride over to Clinton Hill (by subway it would have taken 40 minutes one way). Bibimbap Burger at Social Eatz – NYC

Why is this called a “Bibimbap Burger“? Bibimbap (비빔밥), as you all probably know, is a Korean dish of rice, vegetables, and meat that is mixed with a gochujang (고추장, red pepper paste) based sauce right before eating. “Bibim” means mixed, and “bap” literally means rice, but can more broadly mean food or meal. There are no set rules what goes into bibimbap or bibimbab, but most commonly you’ll find rice, vegetables, beef, an egg (sunny-side up with a runny yolk), a dollop of gochujang sauce (usually a combination of gochujang, sugar, soy sauce, and sesame oil), and a good drizzle of sesame oil. There’s many places to get Taiwanese pork chop over rice in New York. If you recall, there’s even a place called Excellent Pork Chop House on Doyers. Well, forget that place (at least for pork chops) because Hua Ji Pork Chop Fast Food is the MOST EXCELLENT pork chop house. MORE »

Blueberry Pierogi at Veselka – NYC

If you’re a fan of Veselka, a fan of pierogi, or maybe a fan of blueberries, you probably know about Veselka’s seasonal blueberry pierogi. It’s basically blueberries rolled in sugar, wrapped in dough, boiled, and served with sour cream. I’m more of a savory pierogi person (cheese or potato-filled — preferably fried — topped with caramelized onions and sour cream), but when it’s hot as hell and you want something light, it fits the bill quite nicely. Although secretly, I do wish they came fried, like mini blueberry pies you can pop in your mouth one at a time. I was told by a waitress in the past, however, they couldn’t fry the blueberry pierogi because the berries would pop in the frying process. Also, I’m sure creating anything bite-size filled with exploding, hot balls of fruit lava and grease is a lawsuit just waiting to happen. MORE »
