Fried Vegetable Dumplings at Prosperity – NYC

vegetable dumplings @ prosperity

Quite frequently, I’m in the company of vegetarians. (Not sure why. ‘Tis my fate.) This past weekend, I was specifically in the company of one who wanted vegetarian dumplings in Chinatown. I didn’t think we’d have much luck at the usual Chinatown dumpling shops so we ended up at Buddha Bodai. Days later, I thought of looking at Prosperity Dumpling‘s menu online, and lo and behold, they make Vegetable Boiled Dumplings (8 for $2.50). Today, a little recon was in order.

At Prosperity, I ordered the boiled dumplings, but the man at the counter must have been in a good mood, because he offered to fry the dumplings instead. Fried over boiled? Um, “Hell, yeah.” The vegetable dumplings were filled with mushrooms, carrots, cabbage, and mung bean noodles. As vegetable dumplings go, they were decent. My problem with most vegetable dumplings, which was the case here, is that the innards usually lack texture. It’s like biting into a ball of mush. The saving grace was the crunchy fried skin. Thank you dumpling man.

Would I ever choose to eat these vegetable dumplings over pork dumplings? Probably not, but if I had to, it’s not a horrible option. As long as they’re fried.

haha it’s not the texture that bothers me about vegetable dumplings. it’s the lack of meaty proteins. flavor-wise, it’ll just never be meat.

@someguy – You gotta add the hot sauce! Hungry in an hour? Maybe, but I usually am.

@Danny – It’ll never be meat, but I can see the potential. For example, samosas are like dumplings, and they’re awesome.
