Off-menu specials sounds so good! Next time I'm in the area, I'll have to try that! Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for your interesting review of M Shanghai Bistro. I've been there many times and always enjoyed it. My family is from Shanghai and I have to say I really enjoy the food here. M's dim sum and xiao longbao are almost as good as my grandmother's. Having said this, there are a few dishes that cater to more western tastes, but many of the dishes on May's menu are more or less spot-on, authentic Shanghai comfort food, in particular, the noodle soups. Even though many take-out places use "peanut butter" sesame noodles sauce, sesame paste is actually quite common cuisine in China. We tend to make our noodle soups a little sweeter than most. We just use sugar (we use a lot of sugar in our food). I would urge you to try M again. Everything is homemade and made by May's excellent kitchen chefs from Shanghai - much better than anythign you can find in Manhattan. But, I like Joes' Shanghai too (midtown location).May is a friend and fellow sister from Shanghai. If you get to talk to her, sometimes you can get off-menu specials. Good luck!
