My friend Chris invited me to a barbecue last weekend, and wanting to be a good BBQ guest like Deb at Smitten Kitchen, I offered to bake a pie. It turns out, though, no one who was attending the BBQ was very excited at the prospect of pie. Who would’ve thunk it! Geez, how can anyone not like pie? Pies are delicious; it’s jammy fruit in a buttery flaky crust! So then I thought of making a watermelon tomato salad with olives, but after showing Chris the recipe, her response was, “Uh, that’s weird.” Back to the drawing board, I searched the Internet, but nothing seemed really interesting. A few days later I was still lost, but after a few glasses of sangria with friends, it finally dawned on me, ‘My friends are lushes, why not make jello shots!’ MORE »
Remember Psych 101 when you learned about Rorschach Tests? Now what does the hot sauce and yogurt swirl in the image above look like to you? (Feel free to post what you see in the comments.) When I look at the photo, and I know this is not appetizing, I see a bloody nose, because when I was eating the Chicken and Rice from the 53rd and 6th Avenue Cart, I was sure it would happen to me at any moment. What does that say about me? It says that although I fear for my life, I enjoy living dangerously by eating street meat in NYC. MORE »
A few months ago, my mom and I decided to have a spa day courtesy of my boyfriend David. After a relaxing and somewhat painful morning of pampering (extractions hurt like a mofo), we decided to continue the theme of indulgence with lunch at Momofuku Ssäm. As I wrote in a previous post, my mom and I absolutely love, love, love Momofuku Ssäm to death. When it comes to meat, David Chang, the owner of the Momofuku restaurants, is a genius. He seems to really appreciate the actual taste of meat, as he prepares all his dishes so the natural flavors of a particular meat is always showcased. Nothing is overwhelmed with a heavy, over-seasoned sauce. MORE »
On Sunday, I was planning to have a nice simple home-cooked meal for brunch. After eating out Friday and Saturday, I felt I needed something homemade. As I was unpacking my groceries, however, I got a call from Eunice saying we had to go eat at M Shanghai Bistro. At first I resisted, I mean I did just buy some organic prosciutto and a good size wedge of Salva Cremasco, which is currently my favorite cheese. But then she said the magic words “xiao long bao,” and I threw everything in the fridge and left for Williamsburg. MORE »
This is just a random story that I thought was amusing enough to share. Last week, I decided to stop by Grand Street to get some bananas on my way to the subway. As I was waiting to be helped at my favorite fruit stand (on the corner of Grand and Forsyth St), a guy walking by grabbed a longan, spun around, and started walking away backwards with the longan held before his lips, ready to pop it whole into his mouth. He obviously never had a longan before. If you don’t know, longans are not like grapes. Similar to lychees, you have to peel the shell in order to eat the sweet springy flesh inside. And although the peel is not extremely hard, it is definitely not edible. I would say the shell is similar to the bark of a young sapling. MORE »
I feel like the Internet has been going Mexican crazy the last few weeks. I’ve been reading posts about Mexican food left and right. So last night, right before I went to sleep, I decided to to eat tacos for lunch at Tehuitzingo (Yes, that’s right, I think about lunch right before I go to sleep, I’m not ashamed to admit it.).
Before I left for Tehuitzingo, I checked MenuPages and I knew what I wanted. Pig ear! I mean, I never had pig ear in a taco before, so it just seemed logical. I also got a Barbacoa (Goat) Taco and a Carnitas (Pork) Taco, just for good measure. MORE »
A friend of mine is coming into town and asked me to recommend a few Italian and East Asian restaurants. I was planning to send her a quick email, but somehow it got longer and longer and the short email ultimately became a long post. This is a very informal list, in no particular order, of some of my favorite restaurants in New York (Manhattan only). MORE »
